The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), Nile University of Nigeria chapter organised a two days field trip/excursion to the Nigeria Petroleum Development Company (NPDC), a subsidiary of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation in Benin City, Edo State, for her three hundred level (300L) students.

The team comprising of two academic staff (Dr Okafor Ikechukwu and Miss Rahmatu Goni) of the department and 19 students left Abuja on the 26th of May for Benin City, Edo State.

Day 1 of the trip was a visit to the company’s head office for a seminar on the overview of the company and the activities they are involved in, as well as a presentation by a Production Technologist on the activities of the company in one of their fields called Aburra Field.

On the second day, the students visited Oredo Flow Station where they were taken round the three flow stations within the Oredo flowstation, and the yet to be completed Integrated Gas Handling Facility (IGHF). The students were taken through the intricacies of how crude oil is generated, produced, separated from gas and water, to meet market specifications, before being exported to the international markets.

Like most excursions it was brief, but not without many lessons, and the students learnt a lot . The aim of the trip was to put the theoretical aspects of those thing we learnt in the class room in a practical and more feasible sense. The exposure is worth it and we can boldly conclude it bridged the gap between the class room and the industry to a commendable degree.

It is an experience worth having for every aspiring Petroleum and Gas Engineering student.
